Prime Minister Tony Blair said the new Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards—f u nded partly by BP, Hutchison Whampoa, Scottish Power, and Vodafone—will allow over 100 PhD students from India, China, Hong Kong, Russia, and the developin g world to study here. “This is a good example of industry and government working together to help i mprove UK competitiveness and quality of life around the world,” he said in a statement. Two million pounds of the money are coming from the Hong Kong-based, multinati onal Hutchison Whampoa, and funds provided by the companies will be matched by Britain s Research Councils. The first intake in October 2004 will provide fu lly funded scholarships for over 100 students, who will be given fully funded places for 3 years. The winners will also benefit from recent visa changes put in place that allow PhD students to work in the United Kingdom for 12 months after graduating. Dorothy Hodgkin was a crystallographer awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry i n 1964 for her work in determining the structure of important biochemical mole cules. The awards have been named in her honor in recognition of the work she did abroad and in helping overseas students studying in the United Kingdom. The scheme will be administered on behalf of the Office of Science and Technol ogy, by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), who wi ll act as a conduit for funds from all contributors and coordinate placement o f students. The nitty-gritty of the scholarship program has not yet been worked out.
